Yacht charters in Greece

The downside to booking a holiday in such as popular place as Greece is without a shadow of doubt the overcrowding of most popular places with other tourists. There is no way you can go for a trip to Greece in the summer holidays and avoid the masses that congregate here from April to September every year. They’re everywhere, on the beaches, around the major attractions, in restaurants and especially in clubs.
However, Greece is still one of the few countries you must visit at least once in your life, since it’s the birthplace of democracy and modern society, with important contributions in fields like philosophy, mathematics, politics or art. So we propose that you take a different approach this year to a holiday in Greece – go sailing in a yacht charter holiday.
The advantages of a sailing holiday are numerous when you take into consideration the factors it implies. Let’s take first the natural setting of the country, which is made up of many islands, giving its people a strong maritime tradition which can only be useful to yacht charter crews visiting here. Greece seems to have been predestined for yacht charter sailing, since there are a couple of regions where a skipper can sail at will.
One need only mention the archipelagoes in the Ionian and the Aegean Seas, places like the Sporades, the Dodecanese or the Cyclades, the famous peninsulas of Peloponnese or Attica, home to Athens the capital city of Greece, an attraction in itself and, finally, the Saronic and Corinthian Gulf, which are less known but still very attractive from a sailing point of view.
Another advantage is the local infrastructure, which affords a sailing crew to find mooring easily when compared to other countries, at any of its ports, harbors, marinas and anchoring places. There are even islands that are only accessible by boat.
Official figures speak of some 50 classic marinas all over Greece, places where you can find the usual services outside a place where you can drop anchor (we use that term generically, as most marinas won’t let you use an anchor to secure your vessel). That means you get electricity, running water, showers, fuel and even repair facilities. Some of the more modern and fancy marinas even offer entertainment facilities and provisioning.
If you’re not in reach of a marina, you can always moor your yacht any of the ports or harbors of the small fishing villages you encounter on your way or even find a nice protected cove with a view to spend the night. The advantage of mooring like this is that is costs less money (sometimes for a fraction of what you’d normally pay) and you also get to experience the real Greece feeling, which is lost to many of the larger resorts that have become quite commercial.
But one of the most important advantages to chartering a boat is that you are not tied down to only one place, you can “island hop” – a term that was invented in Greece – from place to place, your only restrictions being your budget and your time frame but other than that you can take the time to really explore the countryside or the coast as there are no groups to follow at pace and no crowds slowing you down.
And because the number of yacht charter brokers has been increasing steadily in the last years, the offers for bareboat and chartered yachts keep getting better and better, so that sometimes you can find a better deal than you would get on a regular holiday booked from your travel agent.
So if you’re looking for an action-packed, exciting or just relaxing time in Greece, think about chartering your own yacht and become an explorer of one of the best parts of the Mediterranean. And, as some of the yacht charter veterans will confirm, it’s a once in a lifetime experience that can be made even better by sharing it with family and friends.
