Famous throughout the entire Mediterranean as a idyllic and picturesque holiday destination, the Cyclades archipelago in Greece are also among the favorites of yacht charter sailors for the wide range of sailing possibilities they offer with the 220 islands that are centered around the sacred island of Delos.

Even if most of the islands are uninhabited, there is a handful that are popular among the Greece holidaymakers and whose names often appear of the offers of travel agents. These are Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini, all enveloped in history but also with stunning sceneries which become Meccas for sun worshippers and sailing aficionados everywhere.

These islands are part of the large Aegean archipelago of islands which is also made up of the Sporades and the Dodecanese groups of islands. The odd thing is that the Cyclades are actually peaks of underwater mountains that are located across the central Aegean Sea and that have a reputation of not being the most accessible islands in Greece. But yacht charter crews consider that is a blessing because that means there are fewer people present to crowd the beaches, the bays or the marinas.

The mild climate here can be described as Mediterranean and it is due to the vast spaces of water between the islands and which act as a dampener for the high temperatures in the summer or the low temperatures in the winter. The traits of this type of climate are generally dry, hot summers and mild, wet winters, favorable for summer sailing.

That means that the best time for yacht charter crews to come to the islands is undoubtedly from early spring to late summer, as this also brings about two more important weather patterns that are vital for sailors: predictable winds with plenty of sunshine and low conditions of rainfall. And the last thing you want on your summer holiday is rain. However, skippers should take into consideration the meltemi wind which blows in the region from July to August and can sometimes slow down sail boats.

From the socially-historical point of view, the islands can offer a lot of sightseeing thanks to the fact that they have been inhabited since ancient times and have been the home of prosperous civilizations which have since spread their influence all over the world. This means there are plenty of things to see and learn while in the Cyclades for those with a passion for history.

Out of the whole archipelago, the most popular from a touristic point of view is the island of Delos, the ancient holy island, and then Syros with its great port and Mykonos, which brings the total number of tourists above that of the other archipelagos of the Aegean.

If you are whether it’s difficult or easy to sail the yacht charter Cyclades, the answer is that while they are not the most accessible, they are neither the most dangerous. If you’ve sailed in the Aegean before, you’re going to have no problem in tackling the Cyclades, and your only worry will be looking out for the meltemi winds that blow from the northeast in the summer.

Because of their distinct look and feel within the Greek islands, the Cyclades receive special attention from yacht charter sailors, who come here to explore the Aegean as well as get away from the crowds from neighboring islands like the larger Dodecanese.
